Where the save folder is
SteamDB’s view of the Steam Cloud configuration records root: gameinstall, path: save, and a wildcard covering the folder’s files. It resolves the usual install path as:
[Steam Library]/steamapps/common/Welcome to Elderfield - Full Game/save
Your library can live on another drive or use a different parent folder, so Browse local files is more reliable than pasting a hard-coded drive letter [1].
Make a manual backup without changing the live save
- Close the game
Exit to the desktop and let Steam finish any visible sync before copying. Do not copy while the game is writing a save.
- Open the install folder through Steam
Use Manage → Browse local files, then open
save. This avoids guessing where a second Steam library is mounted. - Copy the entire folder
Copy—not move—the
savefolder to a location outside the game install, such as a dated backup folder on another drive. Keeping the whole folder avoids guessing which files belong to a slot or configuration. - Verify the backup exists
Open the copied folder and confirm it contains files and has a sensible modified time. Leave the original untouched.
This page intentionally stops at a non-destructive copy. It does not tell you to delete the live folder, replace individual slot files, choose a Cloud-conflict side, or edit save data. If recovery is needed, preserve both the local folder and the backup before following version-specific developer instructions.
What Steam Cloud does—and does not do
The Steam store lists Steam Cloud support, while the current Cloud record covers the install-folder save path with a 250-file limit and about 9.54 MiB quota [1][2]. Cloud sync is convenient across supported Steam installs, but it mirrors state; it is not a versioned archive you control.
- Wait for sync to finish before switching devices.
- If Steam reports a conflict, do not choose by habit. Compare timestamps and keep a separate copy first.
- Keep at least one manual backup outside the game’s install folder.
- A green Cloud status does not prove that the newest in-game slot is healthy.
Does the Steam Demo save transfer?
In an August 9 Steam reply, developer Chris Cote said Demo saves transfer automatically to the full game. The same reply says Patreon save folders can be copied into the Steam directory [3]. For a normal Steam Demo save, launch the full game and check the load screen before attempting manual file operations.
If the expected Demo save is missing, close the game, preserve copies of any Demo and full-game save folders you can still access, and report the platform and install locations. The developer’s statement confirms intended transfer behavior; it does not prove that every failed transfer has the same cause.
Quick evidence table
On small screens, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Question | Verified answer | Source limit |
|---|---|---|
| Save folder | save under the game install | Derived from current Steam Cloud configuration |
| Steam Cloud | Supported | Sync is not a user-controlled version history |
| Steam Demo transfer | Intended to be automatic | Developer reply; failed cases still need diagnosis |
| Manual backup | Copy the whole folder while closed | Non-destructive preservation only |
